GreenPro recently had the opportunity to work with a client to create a breathtaking front door entrance to their home.  While our specialty is in outdoor landscape design, the reality is that all aspects of design should work together when it comes to your home, landscape and property.  As a result, it’s important not to neglect any aspect of your home’s design, including the entrance!

First impressions are the most important, and when visitors approach your home, the first impression they will get will be of the entrance.  Are guests confused when they approach your home?  Do they feel welcomed?  Do they feel intimidated?  Small details can make a big difference when it comes to your home, so we wanted to highlight a few ways to approach your entrance that can help visitors and guests feel inspired and welcomed as they step into your home.

As you think about creating a breathtaking entrance to your home, regardless of the space available or type of your entrance, it’s crucial for you to consider a few important things into before starting the project.  First, take a good look at the entrance and try to see what people first see when entering this space. That should be your focal point of attention and should be the star of the décor. Ask yourself: what is the effect I want to create for my guests?  How do I want them to feel as they step into my home?

Also, try not to overcomplicate the design. Stick with simple but strong elements. When choosing the furniture, make sure the materials are suitable for outdoor use and that it’s suited for the climate.  It’s also important that the furniture not overcrowd or complicate the space.

Moreover, the entrance needs to have good lighting – which means thinking through the effect you want, whether bright or subdued, sharp or soft. Color palette is also important, since a bright yellow overhead light will interact very differently with an off-white sandstorm than a sea green. When it comes to lighting, color is crucial!

With those important questions sorted, a few other design tricks can come into play.

Decorating a porch and the entrance to the house

When decorating your porch or patio, a very common design technique is to use flowers. Plants and flowers can be used to create a very beautiful and refreshing first impression. You can either use planters or containers or simply hang pot from an arch and create a very colorful décor. If there are steps leading to your front entrance, you can place plant pots to create a graduate and attractive décor.

Decorating a country house entrance

If you have a country house, then you may need to focus on creating a rustic and inviting décor. For the entrance, you can do so with natural plants and small trees. A colorful mini garden can be created that leads to the entrance of the house while also installing a very friendly atmosphere.

Since you also have the space, you could also place a wooden table with matching chairs there and welcome your guests, inviting them to spend some time outdoors and maybe have a drink before going inside.

Decorating the terrace

Another way of creating a welcoming atmosphere from the entrance is to transform that area into a terrace. You can have a covered terrace with a couple of cozy chairs, maybe a rocking chair and even an outdoor sofa. Add a matching coffee table and some fresh plants and the atmosphere will be divine. Should the terrace be uncovered, you can simply take furniture inside when not used.

No matter your design aesthetic, the reality is that all homeowners want guests and visitors to have an emotional experience when coming up to your home.  GreenPro delights in being able to work with our clients to help them think through these issues, since the entrance to the house has a direct effect on the landscape design and overall home décor.  Stumped for ideas?  Want to take the next step?  Give us a call today, and let’s work together to make your entrance truly breathtaking.
